The Late Bloomer
Travel became my first love after a trip to Europe shortly before turning 30 (I was a late travel bloomer). Having been few places besides Hawaii and countless campgrounds in CA, I had promised myself that I would go to Europe before my 30th birthday. Six months prior to that date, I found myself in a thriving position at a local architecture firm with plentious responsiblity for projects that held my nearly wrapt attention. In a nutshell, I loved what I was doing. Integrity and committment to self having been dear lifetime values, I was going to live up to the promise I had made to myself. On a typical drive returning from a planning meeting with my then boss, completely prepared to hand in my resignation, I turned to him and said: "I need some time off". He said: "how much?". I said: "a month, maybe six weeks". I held my breath. After a long contemplative pause, he asked the next logical question: "for what?". I told him of my promise to myself and that I had to go. Not only did the firm agree to the time off, but they offered me a bonus and paid my salary for the entire time I was away - 37 days. Upon my return they validated my worth at the firm in saying: "you were missed, you will never do that again". I knew that instant that I would have to quit. I would have to create a change that allowed me more time to experience the wonder that I did on that life altering trek.
Since Europe, I have been blessed with travel to many far away and near places in varying manners with a range of purpose. Current focus is upon my immenent departure in an RV with intention to travel around the USA and Canada for a minimum of a year. As I contemplate that endeavor, a year cannot be enough time.
Published travel articles to date are based upon RV travel in Northern CA. I will continue writing and publishing articles during my expanded RV travels.
